![]() Lilydale is also known as the 'Home of the Painted Poles'. A community project was undertaken by the local Regional Arts Branch. This project undertook (with aid of funding from Tasmanian Regional Arts) to visualize the character and history of the Village, by employing local artists to create murals on the Hydro poles within the Village precint. An approach was made to Hydro Tasmania, who, agreed to the proposal. Stringent safety conditons were maintained for the duration of the Project (nine months in total). Fifteen poles were selected, 13 in the main street, 1 in Station Road and one at the service station. The local community was actively involved in the entire project, from attending safety classes, input in designs, sanding and undercoating 15 poles, assisting the 3 artists, placing safety barriers around the site, mixing paints and generally having an enjoyable time. The project was completed on time, on budget and has proven to be a major attraction for tourists and travellers alike.
